Joel Neal is a graduate of Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He obtained his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structures and later went of to obtain his M.S. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Structures. He also obtained Minor degrees in Construction Management and Mathematics.

Research areas include: FEM modeling, non-linear plasticity, advanced non-linear earthquake design of structures, constitutive mechanics, structural applications in bio-engineering, engineering mathematics, advanced steel modeling and design, energy dissipation in steel structures and Steel-Plate Shear Walls.

Joel has been a lecturer at Cal Poly for the Civil Engineering Department. Joel also recently published his research on the design and application of Steel Plate Shear Walls at the Structures Congress in Las Vegas. He is a founding committee member for the 2030 Initiative on the Central Coast to promote green building practices and design.
